EMS: rear-axle steering for fire service, ambulance and heavy recovery vehicles towards 2028

Emergency and recovery vehicles are becoming larger, heavier and deployed in locations where the margin for error is smaller. Urban densification makes streets narrower, electrification makes chassis more complex and the requirement that you must always be able to reach the scene allows no compromises in manoeuvrability. EMS is the next step after ETS: an electro-hydraulic steering system with more direct motor actuation, a more compact system architecture and development to ASIL-D level, aligned with the requirements of safety-critical and emergency-service vehicles.

EMS is currently in the joint development phase. Launch is planned for 2028. Hemscheidt and VSE are already working together with a limited number of vehicle manufacturers on integration and validation.

EMS is being developed together with a limited number of vehicle manufacturers. This is a co-development programme, not a standard customer-supplier trajectory. As an early partner, you can:

  • Contribute technical requirements, axle configurations and integration questions at an early stage
