Steering and suspension systems for fire service, ambulance and heavy recovery vehicles

From fire trucks in historic city centres to ambulances and heavy recovery vehicles, emergency and recovery vehicles require excellent manoeuvrability, stability and reliability. Hemscheidt and VSE’s steering and suspension systems are tailored to specific applications and support driven and non-driven axles in conventional, hybrid and fully electric vehicle platforms.

EMS

EMS is being developed for vehicles in which manoeuvrability and precise positioning are central. The system is compact, easy to integrate and suitable for a wide range of platforms, including fire service vehicles that need to manoeuvre in urban environments with restricted access.

ETS

ETS functions stand-alone on driven as well as non-driven axles, with a choice of electric or mechanical pump drive. This makes the system flexible to deploy without dependence on central hydraulics. It is proven suitable for long and heavy vehicles in which a smaller turning circle makes the difference.

HPS Advanced

HPS Advanced is the choice for emergency and recovery vehicles in which maximum stability, precise axle-load distribution and active load management are required, even under changing and demanding conditions. The system combines integrated sensors, a motor-pump unit and active ride-height control in one compact unit.

HPS

HPS offers the benefits of hydropneumatic suspension in a robust base version. The system is widely deployable for a wide range of emergency and recovery vehicles with variable loads and high requirements for reliability.

Why our steering and suspension systems?

Maximum manoeuvrability
Electro-hydraulic steering systems enhance the manoeuvrability and positioning accuracy of large vehicles when operating in confined spaces.

Less vibration for patients and personnel
Hydropneumatic suspension systems reduce vibration exposure, improving both patient and staff comfort and enabling them to carry out their duties more easily.

Level control for quick and safe access
Electronic levelling improves accessibility and reduces physical strain, ensuring stable operation on uneven ground.

More space for mission-critical equipment
The compact, lightweight system architecture increases both the available installation space and the useful load capacity.

Suitable for electric and hybrid platforms
These systems are designed for use with electrically powered auxiliary systems and hybrid or fully electric vehicle platforms.

Technical support from the very first development phase

We combine expertise in mechanics, hydraulics, electronics and software. This allows us to support at system and integration level, not only at component level. From the first specification of a new vehicle platform through to homologation and commissioning, we support body builders and OEMs in every phase of the development process.

Electro-hydraulic steering for emergency and recovery vehicles

Electro-hydraulic steering systems make large emergency and recovery vehicles more manoeuvrable and are easy to integrate thanks to their compact design and low weight. This gives more design freedom and can, depending on the application and vehicle type, contribute to lower energy consumption compared with conventional hydraulic systems.

Our steering systems are available for driven and non-driven axles and suitable for a wide range of vehicle configurations. This ranges from compact urban fire service vehicles to heavy recovery vehicles with multiple steered axles.

Hydropneumatic suspension for emergency and recovery vehicles

Hydropneumatic suspension systems keep emergency and recovery vehicles stable and comfortable, even on uneven terrain, under high and varying loads and in conditions that are far from ideal. The system offers optimum axle-load distribution and contributes to even driving behaviour for the driver, the team and the patient.

For applications in which vehicle levelling is critical, the system supports active height and transverse control. This is relevant, for example, for lowering the loading floor of an ambulance during stretcher transport, stabilising a recovery vehicle on a sloping location or setting a vehicle level during deployment.
