Hemscheidt VSE

Technology for steering, suspension and vehicle integration

Vehicles are becoming heavier, longer and more application-specific. They operate in confined spaces, under varying loads and in conditions where standard solutions fall short.

Hemscheidt and VSE develop and manufacture steering and suspension technology that enables vehicle manufacturers and OEMs to solve these challenges technically, integrated into the vehicle rather than added as separate components alongside it.

Hemscheidt VSE

Two core technologies, one system approach

The technology portfolio of Hemscheidt and VSE is built around two disciplines:

Electro-hydraulic rear-axle steering: active steering of one or more rear axles through hydraulic power and electronic control. Result: a smaller turning circle, less tyre wear and better driving stability..

Hydropneumatic suspension: a combination of hydraulics and gas pressure for load-bearing capacity, level control and motion control. Result: stable handling under variable loads and lower peak loads on the chassis and body.

Both systems are developed as engineering solutions, tailored to the specific vehicle configuration. See the product pages for more information about the individual systems.

System integration as the starting point

The technical value comes from the way steering, suspension, hydraulics and electronics work together within the vehicle. Our engineers analyse the complete vehicle configuration: wheelbase, axle loads, installation space, body structure, hydraulic system and electronic architecture. Based on this, we determine which system principles and modules fit and where customisation is required. This results in systems that are technically reliable and remain practical to integrate, even in complex or unusual vehicle configurations.

Electronics and software as an integral part

Modern rear-axle steering and level control are not purely mechanical systems. Based on vehicle speed, steering angle, load and vehicle dynamics, the electronic control unit determines when, how much and how quickly the system responds. VSE develops the control software and electronics in conjunction with the hydraulic and mechanical components. This leads to predictable, adaptable system behaviour and makes technical integration with other vehicle electronics feasible.

From development to validation

New systems are developed in close cooperation with OEMs and vehicle manufacturers. Technical requirements, installation conditions and operating circumstances are defined early in the process. Validation takes place under realistic conditions: simulations, test benches and practical tests in the vehicle. In this way, functional operation, durability and reliability are demonstrated under the specific conditions of the end application.

Less wear, less downtime

A vehicle that steers more precisely and suspends more evenly is subjected to less stress. This translates directly into less tyre wear, lower peak loads on the chassis and body, and less unplanned downtime. For technical B2B applications, this directly affects total cost of ownership and vehicle availability.

Application areas

The technology of Hemscheidt and VSE is used in trucks, trailers, buses, special vehicles and off-road applications — especially where manoeuvrability, stability and integration are decisive for performance.
