Steering and suspension systems for city, regional and electric buses

Buses operate in one of the most demanding environments in public transport: dense urban areas, varying passenger loads, frequent stops and strict accessibility requirements. From city buses and regional buses to coaches and electric bus platforms, every application places different demands on manoeuvrability, ride comfort and integration.

The steering and suspension systems from Hemscheidt and VSE are developed for driven and non-driven axles and can be tailored to the specific bus application from the earliest development phase. The systems support conventional as well as hybrid and fully electric vehicle platforms.

Bus

EMS

EMS has been developed for buses in which manoeuvrability and precise positioning are central. For example, when accurately approaching bus stops or manoeuvring in tight depots. Compact, easy to integrate and suitable for a wide range of bus platforms.

ETS

ETS functions as a stand-alone system on driven as well as non-driven axles, with a choice of electric or mechanical pump drive. Ideal for electric bus platforms where no conventional hydraulic infrastructure is present.

HPS Advanced

HPS Advanced has been developed for buses requiring maximum stability, precise axle load distribution and active load management, even under demanding driving conditions and at full occupancy. The system is suitable for city, regional and electric buses with higher axle loads due to battery packs.

HPS

HPS offers the benefits of hydropneumatic suspension in a robust base version, widely applicable to a variety of bus applications with varying loads.

Why choosing our steering and suspension systems

Accessibility and comfortable boarding
Hydropneumatic suspension systems with level control allow the vehicle to ‘kneel’, improving accessibility for passengers.

Stable handling under variable loads
Hydropneumatic suspension systems compensate for variations in load, optimise the distribution of axle loads and ensure stable handling.

Compact and suitable for low-floor platforms
Thanks to its compact and lightweight system architecture, integration into space-constrained low-floor vehicle platforms is simplified.

Suitable for electric and hybrid buses
These systems are compatible with electrically driven auxiliary systems and can operate independently of a central hydraulic power source.

Elektro-hydraulisch sturen voor bussen

Electro-hydraulic steering for buses

Electro-hydraulic steering systems make buses more manoeuvrable in urban environments and reduce steering effort at low driving speeds. This driving profile is common in city and regional buses. Thanks to their compact design and low weight, the systems are easy to integrate. In addition, they can contribute to fuel savings compared with conventional hydraulic systems, depending on the application and vehicle type.

Our steering systems are available for driven and non-driven axles and suitable for a wide range of bus configurations, from a 12-metre city bus to articulated variants.

Hydropneumatic suspension for buses

Hydropneumatic suspension systems keep buses stable and comfortable, even when the load is constantly changing. This is a characteristic feature of line-service vehicles. The system supports optimum axle load distribution and contributes to even vehicle behaviour under all loading conditions.

For city buses where accessibility is central, the system supports kneeling functions: lowering the entrance height on one or both sides at a stop. For intercity coaches and touring coaches, the system supports active level control for a constant ride height regardless of luggage load.
