Electro-hydraulic steering systems

The main reason for choosing electro-hydraulic steering is often a smaller turning circle. It improves manoeuvrability, reduces tyre wear, and allows for greater freedom in vehicle design. To this end, Hemscheidt and VSE develop and manufacture tried-and-tested, application-specific steering systems.

Elektro-hydraulisch sturen

EMS

Space-saving, energy-efficient electro-hydraulic steering system for steered rear axles in trucks, buses and special vehicles. EMS meets the safety, comfort and reliability requirements of modern commercial vehicles.

ETS

Electro-hydraulic steering system for driven and non-driven axles. ETS is a stand-alone system with its own oil supply via an electrically or mechanically driven pump, without dependence on other vehicle systems.

Advanced Steering

Trailer

Electro-hydraulic steering system with an electrically driven pump mounted on the trailer. The required power is supplied via a 24V connection from the truck. The system can be equipped with batteries for use when the trailer is uncoupled.

Special Steering

Trailer

Electro-hydraulic steering system that uses the engine-driven pump of the truck. The pump can also be used for other systems, such as a loader crane or tipping cylinder. Ideally suited to fixed truck-trailer combinations.

Basic Steering

Trailer

Standard electro-hydraulic steering system for trailers with up to three axles and one steered axle. Reliable basic solution with an electrically driven pump.

Smart Steering

Trailer

Electro-hydraulic assisted steering system that actively steers one self-steering axle, both when driving forwards and reversing. Standard solution for trailers with one steered self-steering axle.

What is electro-hydraulic steering?

Electro-hydraulic steering is an electro-hydraulic steering system in which electronic control and hydraulic force generation work together to provide controlled wheel steering angles. Unlike passive self-steering axles or mechanical steering linkages, this system offers greater freedom in vehicle layout, precise control of the steering movement and more compact integration into the chassis.

An important principle in the systems developed by Hemscheidt and VSE is the Ackermann principle: achieving the optimum steering angle for each wheel in a corner. This enables the wheels of a steered axle to follow a more natural path, resulting in better manoeuvrability, less tyre wear and greater driving stability.

Electro-hydraulic steering therefore not only improves manoeuvrability, but also contributes to reduced tyre wear and higher vehicle availability.

The benefits of electro-hydraulic steering

Toegang tot moeilijk bereikbare locaties

Access to hard-to-reach locations

More and more vehicles have to operate on tight terminals, in city centres and at poorly accessible loading and unloading points. Electro-hydraulic steering makes it possible to reach those locations without deploying a smaller vehicle or making extra trips. This directly increases vehicle utilisation.

Meer stabiliteit en controle

Greater stability and control

Wheel movement is electronically controlled and precisely steered. This ensures an accurate and consistent steering response, even with varying loads, long wheelbases or applications where precise positioning is required.

Minder bandenslijtage, lagere onderhoudskosten

Less tyre wear, lower maintenance costs

Because the wheels follow a geometrically correct cornering path, there is less scrubbing between tyre and road surface. This measurably reduces tyre wear. In addition, there are no mechanical steering linkages, which limits the number of wear-sensitive components and reduces maintenance requirements.

Meer vrijheid in voertuigarchitectuur

Greater freedom in vehicle architecture

The compact system does not require mechanical steering linkages through the chassis. This gives vehicle manufacturers greater freedom within the vehicle architecture and makes integration possible in trucks, buses, trailers and special vehicles with a wide range of configurations.

Minder onderhoud, minder ongeplande stilstand

Less maintenance, less unplanned downtime

Thanks to its compact design, limited number of components and the absence of mechanical steering linkages, maintenance requirements remain low. This reduces the risk of unplanned downtime and supports high vehicle availability.

Hemscheidt VSE

Steering as part of the overall vehicle architecture

When developing a new vehicle, steering is never a stand-alone component. It affects the complete vehicle architecture — from axle load distribution and available installation space to software, safety and on-road handling.

That is why Hemscheidt and VSE contribute from the very start of a development project when determining the most suitable steering solution. This approach combines knowledge of vehicle behaviour with expertise in mechanics, electronics, hydraulics and software.

Our systems are developed and manufactured in-house, in accordance with the applicable safety and quality standards for series production at OEMs and vehicle manufacturers.

Bewezen technologie

Hemscheidt VSE

Proven technology, tailored to your application

Not every vehicle requires exactly the same solution. That is why Hemscheidt and VSE work according to the 80/20 principle:

  • 80% consists of proven standard technology, developed on the basis of practical experience and validated components
  • 20% is customisation, tailored to the specific application, vehicle configuration and integration reality

This approach combines development certainty and reliability with the flexibility required for vehicles with specific requirements.
