Steering and suspension systems for heavy off-road vehicles

Off-road vehicles operate in extreme conditions where manoeuvrability, vibration reduction and stability under heavy loads are essential. Hemscheidt and VSE’s customisable steering and suspension systems support driven and non-driven axles in conventional, hybrid and electric vehicle platforms, including trolley-assisted and battery-powered mining vehicles.

Off-road

EMS

EMS is being developed for vehicles in which manoeuvrability and precise positioning are central. Compact, easy to integrate and suitable for a wide range of heavy off-road platforms, including electric mining vehicles with tight packaging space.

ETS

ETS functions stand-alone on driven as well as non-driven axles, with a choice of electric or mechanical pump drive. This makes the system flexible to deploy without dependence on central hydraulics. Proven suitable for heavy multi-axle configurations with high axle-load capacities and demanding steering-angle requirements.

HPS Advanced

HPS Advanced is the choice for off-road vehicles in which maximum stability, precise axle-load distribution and active load management are required, even under varying and demanding terrain conditions. The system combines integrated sensors, a motor-pump unit and active ride-height control in one compact unit.

HPS

HPS offers the benefits of hydropneumatic suspension in a robust base version. The system is widely applicable to a variety of heavy off-road vehicles with extreme loads, high kilometre output and intensive use.

Why choose our steering and suspension systems?

Smaller turning circle on switchbacks and tight construction roads
Electro-hydraulic steering systems reduce the turning circle and improve manoeuvrability, while also minimising tyre wear and operational risks.

Less vibration, less fatigue, higher productivity
Hydropneumatic suspension systems reduce vibration levels, minimising operator fatigue while improving productivity and safety.

Stability and axle-load distribution on uneven terrain
Hydropneumatic suspension systems optimise the distribution of axle loads and ensure stable handling in varying conditions and on different terrains.

Compact and efficient for electric mining vehicles
The compact system architecture minimises weight, maximises installation space, and facilitates integration with electric off-road vehicle platforms.

Technical support from the very first development phase

We combine expertise in mechanics, hydraulics, electronics and software. This allows us to advise at system and integration level, not only at component level. This may concern a new mining platform, a specialist off-road vehicle or an electric heavy-transport vehicle. From the very first development phase, we help make the right choices for integration and vehicle architecture.

Electro-hydraulic steering for off-road vehicles

Electro-hydraulic steering systems make large off-road vehicles more manoeuvrable on the tight bends and switchbacks of haul roads and construction roads, and are easy to integrate thanks to their compact design and low weight. This gives more design freedom and can contribute to lower energy consumption compared with conventional hydraulic systems (depending on the application and vehicle type).

Our steering systems are available for driven and non-driven axles and suitable for a wide range of configurations.

Hydropneumatic suspension for off-road vehicles

Hydropneumatic suspension systems keep heavy off-road vehicles stable and comfortable, even on uneven terrain, under extreme loads and with strong variations in the driving profile. The system supports optimum axle-load distribution and contributes to even vehicle behaviour. This is especially relevant for vehicles that complete dozens of cycles every day over the same challenging route.

In applications where vehicle levelling is important, the system supports functions such as active height and transverse control. This may concern, for example, setting a vehicle level on a slope during loading or unloading, or stabilising a platform for mounted equipment.
