Proven electro-hydraulic rear-axle steering for long and heavy trucks

Trucks have to manoeuvre in locations where space is limited: city centres, loading and unloading zones, construction sites and industrial estates. With a long wheelbase or high axle load, manoeuvrability determines how effectively a vehicle can be deployed.

ETS is an electro-hydraulic steering system that actively steers one or more additional axles, giving the truck a shorter turning circle. The system operates stand-alone: the existing front-axle steering remains untouched and the oil supply is provided via its own electrically or mechanically driven motor pump.

Why choose ETS for trucks?

Shorter turning circle in confined situations
At low speeds, ETS actively steers the additional axle, resulting in a shorter turning circle and more precise vehicle movements. This allows drivers to position large trucks more easily in narrow streets, tight loading zones and construction sites.

Stable at higher speeds
ETS is speed-dependent. As speed increases, the steering angle automatically becomes smaller. Above a set speed threshold, the system fully centres the axle. In this way, ETS combines manoeuvrability at low speed with predictable driving behaviour at higher speed.

Stand-alone, without modification to the front-axle steering
ETS functions independently of the front-axle steering and uses its own oil supply. For vehicle builders and OEMs, this means integration without changes to the existing steering architecture. The steered axle can be positioned at multiple points in the chassis, which offers freedom in vehicle design.

Built for heavy-duty applications
ETS supports steering angles of up to 45 degrees and axles of up to 14 tonnes per steered axle. The system is suitable for heavy distribution trucks, construction vehicles, industrial vehicles, rescue and recovery vehicles and off-road applications.

Less tyre wear through the Ackermann steering principle
ETS works according to the Ackermann principle: during active steering, the wheels describe an optimum arc. This results in smoother steering behaviour in corners, less friction and potentially lower tyre wear — an important advantage for trucks where operating costs are a major consideration.

ASIL-C certified in accordance with ISO 26262
ETS is certified at ASIL-C level. The safety concept is based on a dual-circuit cylinder design with active axle centring, which ensures predictable driving behaviour even under changing driving conditions or in the event of a system fault.
